On Friday, Feb. 16, a portion of Syberton Road in Gallitzin Township, Cambria County, will be dedicated in honor of Private Martin J. Hanlon, a 1968 Penn Cambria High School graduate. Pvt. Hanlon lost his life during the Vietnam War in 1970 when the truck he was serving as a gunner on struck a landmine in Quang Nam Province of South Vietnam.

The renaming of the road is the result of legislation authored by state Rep. Jim Rigby (R-Cambria/Somerset) and became part of Senate Bill 621/Act 17 of 2023. The dedication ceremony will take place at the Cresson American Legion Post 238, located at 222 Ashcroft Ave., Cresson, at 1 p.m.

Members of Pvt. Hanlon's family will be in attendance, along with local military officials. This event is a meaningful way to honor the sacrifice and service of Pvt. Hanlon, who gave his life in service to our country during the Vietnam War.

According to Rep. Rigby, "It is important that we remember and honor the bravery and sacrifice of our local veterans. Pvt. Hanlon made the ultimate sacrifice, and dedicating this road in his honor is a small token of our gratitude."

The dedication ceremony will serve as a reminder of the courage and selflessness displayed by Pvt. Hanlon and countless others who served in the Vietnam War. It is an opportunity for the community to come together and show their appreciation for those who have served and continue to serve our country.

This event holds significant importance for Pvt. Hanlon's family as well. It allows them to see their loved one's memory and legacy preserved and recognized by the community. It is a chance for them to feel the support and gratitude of their community for the sacrifice their family member made.

As we gather to honor Pvt. Hanlon and unveil the newly dedicated portion of Syberton Road, let us remember the sacrifice he made and the sacrifices made by all veterans. Let us never forget the courage and bravery displayed by those who have served our country.
