Mount Aloysius College issued the following announcement on Sept. 17.
The Mount Aloysius College community is celebrating Mercy Week beginning Monday, Sept. 20. The annual festivities culminate on Friday, Sept. 24, with the observance of International Mercy Day from noon to 2:00 pm, with an event featuring food, activities, and games on campus.
The College is one of 17 colleges and universities in the United States that are affiliated with the Religious Sisters of Mercy. Mount Aloysius traces its founding to the efforts of seven Sisters of Mercy in 1853. Mercy Week honors the history and heritage of the order, which began when Mother Catherine McAuley first opened the doors of the House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland in 1827.
“During Mercy Week, we actively reaffirm the College’s dedication to the core values of the Sisters of Mercy: mercy, justice, hospitality, and service,” said Tonia Gordon, Vice President for People & Mission Integration. “Every event is intended to show practical application of the College’s values and those of the Sisters of Mercy all over the world.”
Events are planned for every day of Mercy week. A keynote presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, September 21 at 3:30 pm in the Bertschi Center, featuring guest speaker Sr. Mary Kay Dobrovolny, RSM. Sr. Dobrovolny’s message will be about her recent experiences in Honduras as an advocate for human rights. While in Honduras, Sr. Dobrovolny met with human rights leaders, visited imprisoned environmental defenders, and learned more about issues facing the local indigenous community.
The presentation will be followed by a service at the College’s Peace Pole marking the International Day of Peace led by the Mount’s own Sr. Benedict Joseph Watters, RSM, and Pax Christi.
Other events scheduled for the week include scones and tea, a presentation on Catherine McAuley, and a Mass on Thursday in celebration of birthdays for Sr. Benedict Joseph and Sr. Giuseppe, two long-time serving Sisters of Mercy at Mount Aloysius.
