State Rep. Jim Rigby (R-Cambria/Somerset) is organizing a Cyber Crime Awareness Class in partnership with faculty from Saint Francis University. The event will take place on Wednesday, February 18, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Portage Volunteer Fire Company.
The class aims to educate participants about cyber crime and how to recognize scams. Registration is required in advance by calling Rigby’s office at 814-886-1055 or visiting his website and selecting the “Events” tab.
“An informed consumer is an empowered consumer, and the cyber criminals we’ll be discussing are hoping you fail to recognize the warning signs of a scam and fall prey to their attempts at disrupting your personal life,” said Rigby. “This class is free and designed to help you stay informed, stay alert and stay safe online.”
Three Saint Francis University faculty members will lead the seminar: Dr. Kevin Slonka, associate professor and cybersecurity director in the Computer Science Department; Michael Zambotti, assistant professor in cybersecurity specializing in open-source intelligence, incident response, and risk management; and Dr. Mark Buckwalter, associate professor of criminal justice and retired federal agent with 27 years of law enforcement experience.
“Anyone who’s been through an experience like this knows how damaging getting scammed can be and how difficult it is to recover from,” Rigby added. “Our three speakers have a great deal of expertise in the area of cybercrime.”
