Congressman John Joyce recognized Mary Lidwell on Mar. 23 as part of Women’s History Month, highlighting her service during World War II and ongoing commitment to her community. Joyce introduced Lidwell after meeting her at the Hollidaysburg Veterans’ Home.
The recognition underscores the contributions of women veterans and their lasting impact on local communities. Joyce said, “On behalf of everyone in Pennsylvania’s 13th Congressional District, I thank Mary for her service to our country during World War II and her lifelong dedication to her community. She remains a source of pride and inspiration to all who have the privilege of knowing her.”
Lidwell served in the United States Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during World War II after working as a “Rosie the Riveter.” Raised in Ashville, Cambria County, she graduated from Gallitzin High School in 1942 and supported herself through various jobs before joining a state aeronautics program in Harrisburg. She later worked at Middletown Air Depot before enlisting in 1944. Her military service included basic training at Camp Lejeune followed by assignments in Oklahoma and California where she helped repair aircraft.
After completing her enlistment, Lidwell returned home, married Navy veteran Robert Lidwell, and raised five children—two of whom also served in the armed forces along with two grandchildren. She remained active with veterans’ organizations such as the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and participated regularly in community events honoring veterans.
Joyce has represented Pennsylvania’s 13th district since replacing Bill Shuster in 2019 according to Ballotpedia. He was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, lives currently in Hollidaysburg according to his official biography, holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University (1979) according to Congress.gov, and has served continuously since first being elected as reported by House.gov.
Joyce concluded that recognizing individuals like Mary Lidwell serves as an important reminder of local history and sacrifice.
