State Rep. Jim Rigby (R-Cambria/Somerset) will host a shredding event for residents of the 71st Legislative District on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event will take place at the Richland Township Fire Department.
Rigby emphasized the importance of protecting personal information when disposing of documents. “When you simply throw old tax returns or paperwork containing your personal information out with the trash, you run the risk of having your identity stolen,” Rigby said. “Events like this offer you a free opportunity to safely dispose of your valuable belongings.”
Residents are asked to place items for disposal in their car trunk or truck bed, using containers such as boxes or paper bags. Burgmeier’s Hauling of Johnstown will manage shredding and disposal services.
Rigby also noted potential consequences if sensitive documents are not properly destroyed. “Identity theft can lead to financial losses, damage to your credit score, and other serious problems,” added Rigby. “Thieves can open new accounts, make unauthorized purchases, steal your tax refund and even impersonate you in legal situations.”
For questions about the event or other state government matters, constituents can contact Rigby’s offices in Cresson at 814-886-1055, Ferndale at 814-536-9818, or Somerset County at 1-814-509-6942.
