State Rep. Jim Rigby (R-Cambria/Somerset) will host a shredding event for residents of the 71st Legislative District on Wednesday, Sept. 10. The event is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Richland Township Fire Department.
Rigby explained the importance of secure document disposal, stating, “When you simply throw old tax returns or paperwork containing your personal information out with the trash, you run the risk of having your identity stolen,” Rigby said. “Events like this offer you a free opportunity to safely dispose of your valuable belongings.”
Residents are asked to place items to be shredded in their vehicle’s trunk or truck bed using a container such as a box or paper bag. Burgmeier’s Hauling of Johnstown will oversee the shredding and disposal process.
Rigby emphasized potential consequences of identity theft: “Identity theft can lead to financial losses, damage to your credit score, and other serious problems,” added Rigby. “Thieves can open new accounts, make unauthorized purchases, steal your tax refund and even impersonate you in legal situations.”
For further information about the event or other state government issues, constituents may contact Rigby’s Cresson office at 814-886-1055, his Ferndale office at 814-536-9818, or his Somerset County office at 1-814-509-6942.
