On March 28, Dr. George M. DeKornfeld, a vascular surgeon at Conemaugh Health System, took the oath and was sworn into the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. The ceremony occurred at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center’s Atrium, where Dr. DeKornfeld’s oath was administered by Dr. Richard Goodrich, an orthopedic surgeon with a military background. His colleagues and other military personnel attended.

Dr. Goodrich has an extensive military career, which includes serving as the U.S. Navy Orthopedic Specialty Leader and Director of Medical Training at the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, among others.

During the event, Dr. Jennifer Silvis, a trauma surgeon, awarded Dr. DeKornfeld a U.S. Air Force Unit Coin. This challenge coin is given by commanders for significant achievements. Dr. Silvis has served in the military since 2003 and holds roles as a flight surgeon and general surgeon for the Critical Care Air Transport Team. She has completed tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and was awarded the John J. Templeton Jr. Military Call to Service Scholarship in 2018.

Dr. DeKornfeld also received the Coin of Excellence from Rodney D. Reider, CEO of Conemaugh Health System, recognizing his dedication and contributions to the community and public health.

This event marks a significant milestone in Dr. DeKornfeld’s career and highlights Conemaugh Health System’s ongoing support for the military community and its dedication to healthcare and service excellence.
